  • Night Enchantment

    Night Enchantment

You haven't seen Barcelona until you've seen and heard it at night. The combination of light, shadows, and music create an exotic enchantment that keeps me coming back for more. The harpist played behind the main Cathedral, and it is here that, over the years, I have heard some of the most talented musicians. The night before, I listened to a couple of tenors belting out arias reverberating as in the best opera venues. Here is where the greatest from all over Europe and America come to perform in front of passing nighttime crowds. The echoing acoustics of the gothic cathedral walls remind me of the New York subway; only here they don't get drowned out by passing trains.

  • Steps of the Cathedral

    Steps of the Cathedral

Each time I'm in Barcelona, I roam the gothic section late into the night. Around the main cathedral, there are rich opportunities for taking people photos set against ancient architecture. Once I get going, the hours fly by, and before you know, it's time to get back to the hotel and crash. Anyway, the lady sitting on the steps is just one example of the Barcelona vibe at night.

  • Zen Pipe Smoker

    Zen Pipe Smoker

This guy was sitting in a three-piece suit on a hot day, seemingly oblivious to everything around him. I don't know if he was posing or just practicing the art of Zen pipe smoking. Nevertheless, he seemed content to ignore anyone who stopped to look. It was his clothing more than the pipe that struck me. It was hot and humid, he appeared way over-dressed. There are loads of street performers up and down La Rambla, which made me think he was posing, yet he wasn't collecting money. Now that I think of it, he probably works at one of the boutique hotels and was just taking a smoke break. Mystery solved.

  • Sitges Street

    Sitges Street

Walking along the streets of European coastal towns is an exercise in leisure. And if that's not an oxymoron, I don't know what is. Actually, that goes for a lot I do on vacation - leisure and moron. Relaxation when traveling is a state of mind, sometimes easier said than gained. I do what I can. In this case, I was in the town of Sitges, walking around on a Sunday. I was next to the main church that sits along the sea. Sunday notwithstanding, nobody was going in or out, just tourists, like me, walking around it, taking pictures, and practicing leisure.

  • Taller de Tapas

    Taller de Tapas

Here are some people in the gothic quarter of Barcelona sitting outside at a tapas bar, talking late into the night. Scenes like this occur over and over, and I think, are typical of Catalonian culture. Not that I'm an expert, but it seems quite friendly and puts a lot of value on spending time with family and friends. It's not difficult to see the appeal, especially in places like Barcelona. Sure, every area has its problems, but it's fun to see different lifestyles and wonder what it would be like to live there, if only for a spell.

  • Lloret de Mar Night Scenes 3

Lloret de Mar Night Scenes 3

Here are a few scenes from Lloret de Mar. One of my favorite things to do is walk around and take photos of night scenes. I guess you could call it a type of street photography. I like capturing people enjoying themselves in cafes. I also love leading lines, and so I look for people walking down alleyways illuminated with overhead lights. These are all from our first night in Spain after landing in Barcelona. Of course, we were tired after the redeye flight. But, because our body clocks were 6 hours earlier, we felt fine. So we walked along the streets and shops, stopping for dessert and coffee. Nevermind it was the end of summer, it was warm, and the cafes were full of people talking and enjoying themselves. It was a happy experience. Anyway, this type of photography wouldn't be the same without people in it. I enjoy being in places where people are relaxed and having fun milling about, socializing with friends and family. These photos try to capture some of that.

  • Spanish Nights

    Spanish Nights

This scene is typical among the towns of Spain. In particular, this is in Lloret de Mar along the Catalonian coast. These types of street scenes are a favorite of mine because they convey a nightlife ambiance. I take photos like this by using a high ISO, (in this case, 2000), and a low f-stop, (in this case, 2.8). That combination allows picture taking as though it was daylight. Granted, I do post-processing to get the look I'm after - painterly is a word that describes this type of treatment. We stayed in Lloret de Mar on our first day of vacation. It's a little over an hour from Barcelona airport and is an excellent way to decompress from an all-night flight. And, because the body clock was on North American time, it was easy to stay up late and get these scenes, despite the lack of sleep.

  • Park Scene

    Park Scene

On a typical evening at Bayfront Park in Sarasota, people are walking along a scenic path or merely sitting on a bench. Given the view, can't say that I blame them. Sometimes I come here to take sunset photos; other times I prefer to take pictures of people watching the sunset. I'm not sure which I like more, it depends on my mood I suppose. This is street photography, even though it's in a park. The idea is to freeze a moment in time to preserve the essence of movement, place, and people. Street scenes are studies; they take something fluid and solidify to be examined in detail later. In scenes like this, I see things that were not apparent at the time. I think there is value in that, like maybe an appreciation for the multitude and beauty of things unnoticed.

  • Crew on Deck

    Crew on Deck

The Platypod is a mini holder for the camera that allows you to get these low angles. If nothing else that provides a different perspective. The crew of our ship would wash the decks with hoses each morning. Because I have a habit of waking up before dawn, I'd see them and then use the Platypod to take photos like this. I guess we can call these types of shots low angle studies. There are a lot of things to take pictures of on a ship, but after a while, I was wracking my brain for something new. Once I discovered this little trick, I made a ton of these studies. Eventually, it got old, and so the next time I go on a cruise, I'll be looking for something else to keep me interested.

  • Evening in the Park

    Evening in the Park

The other night we hung out in a tree-lined park with outdoor cafes and listened to live music by candlelight. And to top it off, we were a thousand miles from land. The Symphony of the Seas has six neighborhoods, and Central Park is my favorite. There are upscale restaurants with outdoor seating. At one end is Vintages, a wine bar where somehow, I end up at least once a day. In the afternoon, there might be one or two patrons, and you can sit at an outdoor table, and watch folks stroll by. There are way too many choices; neighborhoods, restaurants, nightclubs, sports, shopping, and bars. Speaking of which; there are at least sixteen different bars, and I had a plan to try each one. I'm only halfway through, and it's not looking like I'll hit the goal. But rest assured, it's not for lack of trying.

  • More Rain

    More Rain

You'll forgive me if I post another photo of the rain. Personally, it's something I can't get enough and just think it's kinda cool. Taking photos in the rain is akin to low light photography, the weather has a way of creating a mood. In Europe, it's enhanced by the architecture of the old streets. This was taken on a rainy October day in Malaga when I got soaked to the bone. About a year or two prior I did the same thing in Solerno. Back then I bought an umbrella from a vendor who magically appeared as soon as the rain started. I paid too much for the umbrella and then lost it on a bus. I've since given up on umbrellas when taking photos. Besides, it's not really feasible to hold an umbrella and take a picture, unless you have three arms.

  • The Rain in Spain

    The Rain in Spain

Last week we were in Malaga for a day as our ship made it's only port of call before crossing the Atlantic. As luck would have it, it rained cats and dogs, which was perfect for my purposes. I like shooting at night, but if I have to take photos in a European city during the day, rain is my next best friend. It puts everyone a little out of sorts as they rush to and fro with umbrellas. It also creates that nice sheen on the ground to add a little extra something to the image. The only catch is you have to be willing to get wet, which I did, beyond a reasonable doubt. I had been here previously when I was about eleven years old. When I saw the section of the city that faced the port, little bubbles of long lost memories began to percolate. My conscious mind has long folded over those early years, but it would've been nice to have an old photo to help free more bubbles. Nevertheless, I was struck with the desire to return and explore a little more. So I will plan on that, and when I do, who knows what I might uncover.

  • Plaza de la Merced

    Plaza de la Merced

It might be an understatement to say it was raining cats and dogs in Malaga. But that's of little consequence when you traveled over four thousand miles to get here. I was determined to go out, come hell or high water. The universe obliged and gave me high water. I wore jeans, a light rain shell and got utterly soaked. The bus pass in my pocket was unreadable and plastered flat against my iPhone. When I showed it to the driver, she seemed more worried about my phone than the pass. Thankfully, iPhones are water resistant these days. Speaking of which, I've read a lot about how the Sony a7RM3 is "water resistant," so I decided to put it to the test. Imagine standing under a sprinkler. A little moisture got onto the lens mount, and the camera started giving me error warnings; however the camera and lens continued to operate, and I didn't lose any shots. The camera got soaking wet. When I got back to the ship, I let it dry for a few hours, and it was perfectly fine. I suspect a tighter lens fit of a pro-grade GM lens would have eliminated that issue, but I was using the consumer grade 85mm f1.8, which I love as a lightweight travel lens. All in all, I had a blast and, it was a good test of equipment and perhaps, my own craziness.

  • La Rambla Ice Cream

    La Rambla Ice Cream

They have it all wrong because I think ice cream is the real gateway drug. And besides, it's highly addictive. I want to be in Barcelona at La Rambla on a warm night having an ice cream cone. I can be clumsy with food, so I got a small cup instead. There's something about walking around with ice cream; for the time it takes to eat, reality gets suspended, and you have not a care in the world. We were walking back to our hotel after spending time in the gothic quarter, and I was randomly snapping photos of people and vendors. For me, this captures some of the magic of that night, and believe me; there is always a bit of magic here. But now looking at it again, I think it might be time for ice cream. Not that I'm addicted or anything like that.

  • NBA Cafe

    NBA Cafe

It's odd seeing an American sports bar in Spain. Maybe the NBA is popular here, what do I know? Or perhaps it just caters to American tourists. I was in Barcelona for only a day, so I took pictures of everything and anything. These are the windows of the NBA Cafe on La Rambla. Anyway, I just thought it was cool how the windows were outlined with neon lights. Like I said, anything and everything.

  • Non-Mall

    Non-Mall

I left my wife in a shoe store as I walked around taking photos in the old streets of Barcelona. This is not your typical mall. There's something pleasing about photos of people juxtaposed to the surrounding buildings; especially when the buildings are very old or very new. Even if the people are just going shopping, it's better than hanging out at the mall. Malls are becoming a thing of the past. Or, maybe, they are morphing into something else, less mall-like. I'm not sure I buy into that because as long as you have to drive to a mall, it's still a mall. But I digress. Where was I?

  • Shop Local

    Shop Local

I was somewhere off La Rambla watching other people shop. Not something I'm fond of, shopping that is. There are a lot of things I'm not fond of, but having a camera turns the most hated activity into an artistic endeavor. Like taking pictures of shoppers, suddenly I can go shopping with my wife and have a good time. But nowadays the only place it seems you can take photos of shoppers is in Europe. Here in the states, shopping is in a mall and the last time I took my camera, the mall cop and asked not to take photos. He said I could use a phone, but not a camera. If that doesn't sound ridiculous, I don't know what does.
